There are SSR app on NuxtJS which is running now at localhost:3000Wish that it was available to domain name my-domain.dev
I threw the file Apache-PHP-7-x64+Nginx-1.12_vhostn.conf in the folder /my-domain/public
1. The domain is still processed by Apache, which should probably redirect to /my-domain/public/api/ in which backend?
With a proxy like understood. Apache-PHP-7-x64+Nginx-1.12_vhostn.conf replaced
proxy_pass http://%ips%:%httpbackport%/;
on proxy_pass http://localhost:3000;
And everything seemed to work. Probably clumsy, but I hope it will be enough for testing on a local server.
The question remains, how to pass all requests from /my-domain/public/api to the PHP backend?
And actually, through mod_rewrite, I caught the request to /public/index.php, then I already registered the route for /api in the backend and forward with the song =)
Default OpenServer config:
If you start working with the Go language and you have OpenServer installed, you can make a go server on the local domain and with Nginx to serve static files.
In the OpenServer settings, make the work through Nginx:
There will be 2 files: Nginx-1.12_server.conf and Nginx-1.12_vhost.conf
Open the Nginx-1.12_server.conf file, we do not need vhost (OpenServer copies it many times for each domain)
Add the following lines to the end of the Nginx-1.12_server.conf file:
Pay attention to the directives: server_name — specifies the domain name root — specifies the folder where to look for static files proxy_pass — where the Go server is running
Separately, by the root directive: The site cannot be placed in the domains folder, where the main sites are located, otherwise OpenServer will add its settings for it and there will be bugs, create a folder in another place. It did not work for me with Cyrillic in the folder path, it is desirable that there be only Latin characters and no spaces.
It remains to add our domain to hosts
Open C:WindowsSystem32driversetchhosts, add line 127.0.0.1 golang.local
Save everything, start OpenServer, start Go server.
Opening http://golang.local/ in the browser, we see the response of the Go server there:
Put the image in the folder that we specified as root in the nginx config, open it on our local site:

Hello everyone 🙂
We continue the cycle of publications dedicated to self-creation of sites on Laravel 5. In the previous articles in this series, I told you what Laravel is and how it can be installed on a hosting or local web server.
Today we’ll talk about how to set up Laravel to run real projects based on it.
Don’t understand what setting we are talking about? Then just try running Laravel in the browser after installing it — I think that all questions will disappear by themselves 🙂
The Laravel file structure has one annoying feature for beginners — the index.php file, which is recognized by web servers as an entry point to the site, is located not in the project root, but in the “public” folder.
Therefore, after installing Laravel on your web server and entering the site’s domain name in the browser, instead of the expected start page, you will see only a list of files.

Working with such a sheet in the future will be extremely inconvenient and you don’t even have to think about any CNC.
In order to tell the server that the entry point is not in the root of the site, but in its public directory, we need to either change the settings of the server itself, or, if you are using the Apache Web server, edit the .htaccess file.
And besides pure web servers, there are various software builds for the comfortable work of web developers. They are called LAMP, WAMP, MAMP, XAMP.
The first letter of these abbreviations means the OS on which the assembly will work (Linux, Windows, MacOS, X — any). And the last three are the capital letters of the main programs for creating sites included in the distribution (Apache, MySQL, PHP).
I can say that I am a fan of such solutions and have been using them almost from the very beginning of my professional career as a web developer.
And, although other tools for quickly starting web projects are actively used today — virtualizers and virtual development environments, which I mentioned in the previous article on installing Laravel, I am still a supporter of using *AMP builds.
I myself develop under Windows OS and use the WAMP assembly of OpenServer, which I have already spoken about in articles on this blog.
By the way, the product, despite its capabilities, is free and is developed exclusively by its creator. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you also try OpenServer if you are not already using it, and help the project if you are impressed.
Well, since I started talking about OpenServer, I’ll start setting up Laravel to fully launch projects using its example.
Installing Laravel on OpenServer
First of all, I want to say that using OpenServer greatly simplifies the launch of Laravel projects. you do not need to perform any manipulations in the console and waste your time on additional server software settings necessary for correct interaction with each other.
For all this, OpenServer already has everything you need. You just need to know where and what to click 🙂
So, after installing OpenServer and running it, we need to configure Laravel to run the project on a direct request to its domain name, and not to the public folder.
Before this step, it is assumed that you have already installed Laravel and placed its files in the domains folder on OpenServer, which is intended just for future sites launched using the server. In my example, Laravel is located along the path «C: openserverdomainslocalhostlaravel.corp».
I can now launch it in a browser only by sending a request to the URL «http://localhost/laravel.corp/public», which is extremely inconvenient. So, to get rid of this trouble, the first thing we need to do is go to the OpenServer settings, which can be done as follows:

In the window that opens, go to the «Domains» tab and in the «Domain Management» list, select the «Manual control» or «Manual + Autosearch» item so that you can set arbitrary domain names for your projects.
I used the first option as an example, but I still recommend the last one, because it allows you to add arbitrary domain names, as well as launch projects from the «openserver/domains» folder, referring to them by their directory names.
With manual control, you will be able to launch only those sites whose domain names will be registered on the server with links to the corresponding folders:

So, to add a new domain, write its name in the «Domain name» field, and in the «Domain folder» field, select the directory with the site files. After that, do not forget to click the «Add» button, and then «Save», after which the server will restart.
By the way! With this option of adding new sites to the server, resource files can be located anywhere, not necessarily in “openserver/domains”.
If you did everything right, then when you type in the browser the domain name (laravel.portfolio in my case) that you added, you will see the standard Laravel welcome page:

Congratulations, this completes the installation of Laravel on OpenServer. The site is up and running, and now there is no need to access the public folder!
First of all, I would like to recommend that you make a backup of the working site in case you do something wrong and need to quickly return to the starting point.
To do this, simply copy the directory with the project or make an archive in a separate place, briefly describing the current functionality and creation date.
It would also not be superfluous to make a Git repository to store a list of changes and quickly restore them in the future.
If you work on your own (I mean, not in the office) and you don’t have your own Git server, you can deploy it on your work machine by making a bare repository in a separate directory, or upload changes to GitHub (I think that for your local purposes, a public repository is quite enough, because private is paid).
As you can see, the Laravel site looks so-so out of the box 🙂 In general, you can call the welcome page a site if you have a certain amount of courage and imagination.
But, this is the root difference between frameworks and CMS, because the last type of engine is already a full-fledged site. While the framework only makes it possible to build one.
And we will start developing directly in the next article, where I will show you how to “pull” a pure HTML template onto a framework, on the basis of which we will later create a full-featured business card site with an admin panel and the ability to blog .
So, for fans of Windows and OpenServer, we have set up Laravel. But what about those who use Linux distributions or MacOS, on which OpenServer does not work?
Once upon a time I had a similar task — to set up Laravel on an Ubuntu server.
How to be?
Noteworthy is setting up virtual hosts, which will be rooted in the public folder of your Laravel project (in fact, this is what we did when running Laravel on OpenServer). But, this option is only suitable for local use and on dedicated servers.
Consider these operations for various web servers.
Set up a Laravel project on different web servers
Since the most common software web servers today are Nginx and Apache, I will consider this process for them.
Setting up Laravel for Apache
For Apache, Laravel setup can be done in two ways, each of which we will look at in detail:
It will consist of configuring Laravel as a virtual host. The best way to do this is to use the console mode (at least that’s what I personally do) and it will look like this:
1. Go to Apache virtual hosts folder:
2. If you have not created virtual hosts yet, then in this folder you will have only one file default. Open it for editing or copy and rename it to the name of your future site. For example laravelsite.local.
3. Write the following settings inside the file:
4. If you created a new file in sites-available, then to activate the virtual host you will need to link to the file from available in apache2-enabled (on Unix-like systems, this is done using the ln command). If you edited an existing default file, then these steps will be redundant.
5. Restart Apache.
That’s all, after starting Apache, the site will be available at http://laravelsite.local/. If something goes wrong, then look for the error text in the Apache logs.
Its code should be as follows:
This one should be placed in the Laravel folder in .htaccess, which is located in the root of the project itself. The .htaccess that is in the public directory does not need to be touched!
That’s it, we’ve figured out how to configure Laravel for Apache. Now is the time to do the same for Nginx, which is also quite actively used to run web projects due to its fantastic speed.
Set up Laravel project on Nginx server
So, for setting up Laravel for Nginx, unfortunately, there is not such an abundance of different ways as for Apache. At least the only one I know of is in the form of the Laravel project settings in the form of a virtual host.
If you know more, then don’t be silent and share them in the comments with me and everyone else 🙂
In the case of Nginx, to configure virtual hosts, you need to follow the same steps as in the case of Apache:
1. Go to the Nginx virtual hosts folder:
2. Make a new virtual host file or edit an existing default.
Please note that the last block of code is the PHP settings for running the site: the path to the interpreter, modules, file extensions, etc. If the site does not work with these settings, then edit them in accordance with your server configuration. Look for the detailed error text in the Nginx logs.
4. If you have created a new virtual host, then activate it by creating a link to a file with settings from the sites-available folder in sites-enabled. If you did not create a new host, but edited an existing one, then we skip this step.
5. Restart Nginx.
So, after these steps, when you enter the site address in the web browser (in my example it will be http://laravelsite.local/), you will see not a list of files, as before, but the expected Laravel welcome page.
If this does not happen, then look for answers to the question in the logs of your web server (Nginx or Apache, respectively). Most likely, they will be caused by incorrect permissions on various folders (both for the project as a whole and for individual internal directories). In this case, all you need is to set them to 755 or 644 🙂
If you find something more difficult, then describe your problem in the comments, I will try to help you.
Setting up locales and database connections in Laravel
Now you can proceed directly to the development.
We will start writing the working code in the next post, but in today’s post we will simply set up the working environment by setting all the necessary settings.
Since in the future I plan to demonstrate the creation of a business card site with the ability to blog, we will need to create a database for this site (DB) to store the text and title of blog posts in it.
Therefore, I am not eager to describe this process for the hundredth time. If you do not know how to do this, then you can find this information in the article on creating a blog on WordPress, for example.
So, let’s assume that you have created a base. Now it’s time to set up the connection in the framework itself.
The settings of the various components that make up the framework are stored in separate files located inside the config directory, which after installing a clean Laravel distribution looks like this:

Here, as you can see, there are configs for various things: sessions, caching, file system, authorization, etc. Among other things, there is also a config with the settings necessary to interact with the database.
By the way! You can find the settings of installed third-party extensions (packages) in the same directory after installing them and publishing configs. True, not always. Some developers prefer to store them along with the rest of the package files in the vendor folder.
I won’t give it here in full, because you can always open it yourself and see. And I don’t see the point in describing what each individual option is responsible for, either. each of them is well documented by the creators of Laravel.
The only thing I want to draw your attention to is the constant use of the env() function inside the configs:
The env() function in Laravel is a reworked version of getenv(), which is part of the DotEnv PHP library by Vance Lucas, which is used as part of Laravel.
This library allows you to create a file with a list of working environment variables — .env in the root of the project, the variables from which become globally available thanks to the getenv function (env for Laravel) and from the $_ENV and $_SERVER superglobal arrays.
Moreover, as you can see in the example above, this function takes two parameters:
The question arises: “What kind of environment is this?”. This refers to a set of project settings that are relevant for individual developers, i.e. stored on his work computer.
These are database connections and, possibly, even separate drivers for caching, session storage, etc., which the developer prescribes at home, raising a local copy of the project.
Naturally, the name of the local database, for example, may (and most likely will) not coincide with the main one.
So, in order not to change the values of global variables every time after uploading files to a common repository or server, these variables are stored in a special local environment file, which is automatically added to .gitignore and is not viewable in some file systems and programs (for example, it is not visible in the WinSCP SSH client with basic settings).
All these measures are made in order to reduce the number of temptations to pour your local settings into a common boiler, which will lead to confusion and the collapse of the project in production (the main version of the project used by end users).
Why am I doing all this? Besides, it’s better for us to store our settings in the .env file. While you are working alone on the project, for you, of course, there is no difference — whether the settings will be stored in .env or in specialized configs.
But now, as soon as new developers join the work on the project, the expediency of this approach will become obvious.
By the way, in .env you can add your own arbitrary variables that you want to make global and access them using the env() function, specifying the variable name as a parameter in the way it is used in existing configs.
So, open the .env file and look for the following block of variables responsible for the database connection settings:
By the way! If you installed Laravel not through Composer, but, for example, manually, by downloading from GitHub, then you will not have an .env file. Instead, you will find the .env.example file, which you will need to copy and rename to .env manually.
In my case, I named the database laravel_corp. My database user is standard — root, the password is empty. With UBD I use MySQL and the server is located on my local PC.
Therefore, my config looks like this:
I think that following my example, it will be easy for you to enter your settings.
Another thing you may need to change in Laravel’s default settings is the locale and time setting. Where can it be useful?
Locale is the default language. Therefore, if your site is multilingual, then the content in this language will be by default.
And we need to set the time (time zone) for the correct storage of data related to time (creating a record in the database, updating it, etc.). Personally, the incorrect value of this parameter really spoiled my nerves once, when I could not understand why the chat message that I had just sent had an hour less creation time. And the only parameter was to blame for everything 🙂
Therefore, I advise you to immediately dot all the “e” and set these tricky variables to the desired values initially, so as not to rack your brains later why something is not going the way you want.
So, both variables are in the same file — config/app.php. Open it and look for the next block:
In my case, their meanings were ‘Europe/Kiev’/’ru’. Here I would like to make a small clarification about the time zone.
Initially, when I saw the value «UTC», I wanted to use the record in UTC+2 format, but this variable accepts PHP timezones as a value, you can find the one you need at the specified link.
Well, actually, that’s all I wanted to tell you today. During the publication, we made a comprehensive configuration of Laravel, starting with launching the project on the Apache, Nginx and WAMP assembly of OpenServer web servers, and ending with setting the global variables necessary for connecting to the database and correct operation of the site as a whole.
I hope the material was useful for you. Which of the above recommendations worked for you, which did not, what difficulties and comments arose along the way — write about everything in the comments, share your opinions and experiences with others.
Also don’t forget to use social buttons under the article.
That’s all for me. See you soon 🙂
