eBay shoppers will now be able to buy installation services along with their purchases. The company this morning announced new partnerships with Handy, Porch and InstallerNet, which will allow online shoppers the option of booking installation and assembly services when buying items that require a bit of extra work — like TVs, bikes, furniture and more.
New York-based Handy will be available to handle things like TV mounting, smart home setup, furniture assembly and more. Meanwhile, Boston-based InstallerNet can coordinate installation of consumer and commercial electronics through independent contractors.
And Seattle-based Porch’s network of professionals can handle over 1,000 different types of projects, also including TV mounting, furniture assembly and more.
“A massive amount of home and electronic items are sold on eBay daily, many of which require professional installation,” said Alyssa Steele, vice president of Merchandising at eBay, in a statement. “ With these new partnerships, we’re able to combine our incredible selection of inventory with easy access to affordable and trusted service professionals, making eBay a one-stop shop for our customers.”
This is not the first time eBay has offered installation services on its site. It launched tire installation services in late 2017. The company says it plans to expand its services offering in the future.
Home services is a growing area of opportunity for e-commerce players. Amazon has offered home services on its site for years, and Walmart more recently partnered with Handy to do the same.
Handy currently has a similar deal with Walmart both in-store and online. The company was also recently acquired by Angie’s List parent company, ANGI Homeservices, owned by IAC, which gives it more opportunity to pursue these high-profile deals.
“We are thrilled to add to the growing roster of top retail brands who rely on our platform to provide fast and convenient assembly and installation services,” said Oisin Hanrahan, CEO of Handy, in a separate statement. “ The integration with Handy will enhance the shopping experience on with seamless access to service professionals who can help buyers avoid headaches and enjoy their home goods purchases without the hassle,” Hanrahan added.
Founded in 2012, New York-based Handy has raised over $110 million, according to Crunchbase, for its app that lets anyone book household service providers, like cleaners, plumbers, handymen, and more. Today it has grown to over 80,000 service professionals on its platform, and has served over half a million customers to date across over a million bookings.
However, Handy will charge a flat rate of $59 for furniture assembly across the board, or $79 for TV mounting and installation.
To buy the service, Walmart customers can pick up a card from Handy’s in-store display then bring it to the register to pay. They will then receive a unique code to enter on Handy.com/walmart. On the website, they can book a local service pro as they would normally, by scheduling an appointment from 7 am to 11 pm. The Handy professionals’ work is also guaranteed and insured through Handy’s Happiness Guarantee.
“At Walmart, we are tirelessly searching for new and creative ways to improve the everyday lives of our customers by providing great experiences that extend from our stores into their homes,” said Daniel Eckert, senior vice president, Walmart Services and Digital Acceleration, in a statement. “ Our program with Handy enables us to eliminate the friction of installation and assembly, and offer customers a convenient, delightful experience from start to finish. We know Handy’s services are going to be a big help to our busy customers.”
In addition to competing with Amazon, IKEA, and other retailers offering home installation through various partners, Handy also competes with other home services providers, like Thumbtack or HomeAdvisor. The introduction of its service to Walmart’s heavily trafficked retailed stores will now give it a leg up in acquiring new customers, and may then see those customers return for other work in the future after becoming aware that Handy exists.
Handy has a similar deal with Wayfair to help online shoppers book assembly at checkout.
Meanwhile, Walmart benefits by being able to offer customers another means of booking home assembly and installation help, in addition to its existing partnership with Porch.com for online purchases.
Handy is not yet available in 2,000 Walmart stores as of today. Instead, it started off with a test in Atlanta that’s now grown to 25 stores. It will expand to reach 2,000 additional stores by next month, the retailer says. Walmart has 5,000 U. S. stores in total, so this is not a full rollout across the U. S., but will serve customers in 45 states where Handy is available.
In March, Walmart announced it was partnering with Handy to sell its in-home installation and assembly services in over 2,000 of its brick-and-mortar retail stores. Now, that partnership is expanding to Walmart’s e-commerce site, too. This week, Walmart began offering online shoppers the ability to add Handy services to their cart at checkout. This allows customers to order in-home installations for things like mounting TVs, or get help with assembling their furniture, among other things.
The news was first reported by Bloomberg on Wednesday, when Handy became available to online shoppers. However, the full rollout of Handy across Walmart’s e-commerce site will continue throughout September – meaning, if you don’t see the option now, you will fairly soon.
Founded in 2012, New York-based Handy lets anyone book household services like cleaners, plumbers, handyman services, and more. The company, which is backed by $110 million in VC funding, has grown over the years to over 80,000 service professionals on its platform, and has served over half a million customers over half a million bookings.
Being offered by Walmart both in stores, and now online, has been a big win for the services provider, as it greatly expands its ability to reach customers without having to spend on marketing.
Via the Walmart.com U. S. website, Handy will be offered for indoor projects, including furniture assembly ($95), hanging TVs ($79), installing ACs ($90), and a number of others like hanging ceiling fans, installing garbage disposals, installing lighting, and more. Handy says the range of services may be expanded in the future. In addition, Walmart may choose to offer Handy’s full range of services at some point – which includes things like housecleaning and various handyman services.
Adding services to e-commerce sites allows retailers to also generate more revenue from online shoppers, without having to stock more inventory. Customers benefit as well, since installation and assembly services were traditionally offered by the brick-and-mortar stores they once frequented, but were slower to arrive online.
IKEA is also venturing into this space – it acquired TaskRabbit in fall 2017, and then rolled out its own furniture assembly service earlier this year, both online and in stores.
Walmart, meanwhile, has a history of leveraging partnerships to venture into areas where it wants to challenge Amazon and others.
The Handy installation services will be available via Walmart’s website in the U. S. when the rollout completes in September.
